Why did my doctor prescribe me metformin?

I don't have diabetes, and my periods come every 28 days TO THE DAY. Although they are extremely immense, they are on time.
I only own a few cysts on my ovaries, not the classic PCOS "string of pearls".
My blood sugar stays around 80.
I took depo provera as a teen which caused me some trouble,no periods for 10yrs, 5 miscarriages.
I own no children, and don't really care if i have any at this point,so it's not for fertility reason.
My only health issues are that i'm 30lbs overweight, and i enjoy a cyst on my thyroid.
Will the metformin make the thyroid cyst go away or speed up my sluggish metabolism or something? Will it mess up my period again? I've just now gotten them straightened out and on diary!
I just don't understand why his nurse call me and told me to go to the pharmacy and pick up a metformin prescription.
making an appointment with your doctor and writing down all your question before you go will be more paying special attention for you. if you are not happy with your doctor look for another doctor who will explain your strength conditions, symptoms and medication to you. If you find that you can't get all the answers when you stop by the doctor try taking someone you trust with you to help you ask question and understand answers
I had PCOS and I'm over weight ,they put me on Metformin to see if it would help out me lose weight. Some times people next to PCOS are insulin resistant and it causes them to store calories instead of burning them . I didn't like the side effects and go off of it. I wouldn't take any meds minus knowing why they were prescribed. Call the office and recount them about your question. They should be jubilant to help you resolve this.Never be afraid to ask questions , especially when it comes to your condition. making an appointment with your doctor and writing down all your question before you go will be more paying special attention for you. if you are not happy with your doctor look for another doctor who will explain your strength conditions, symptoms and medication to you. Most women with PCOS are borderline diabetics. You might own run high in your closing blood work. It will help your metabolism, because your body will be able to use the dash in the food you eat much more efficiently. You should ask your doctor to give you his reasons and a full explanation for prescribing any drug.
Hey Vijay constant 80 sugar reading is by no channel high. Good thing you aren't a doctor.
becouse you have lofty sugar
This is for type 2 diabetes.
If you truly hold normal sugar (80), it is hard to become conscious why he used metformin. I would calland ask to be sure its not sounding right although sometimes meds are and can be for somethign else.

Answers:    I would call the doctors department back and question why he would put you on a hypoglycemic agent when you are not a diabetic. Metformin help people lose weight but single if they are a diabetic. This drug may cause your blood sugar to drop to a dangerously low height. Don't take it without confirming that they in truth meant this medication for you. They might have lately gotten the patients confused. I would definitely confirm that the prescription was expected for me.
Indications
The main use for metformin is in the treatment of diabetes mellitus type 2, especially when this accompany obesity and insulin resistance. Metformin is the only anti-diabetic drug that have been proven to reduce the cardiovascular complications of diabetes, as shown contained by a large study of overweight patients with diabetes.[11] Unlike the other most-commonly prescribed class of oral diabetes drugs, the sulfonylureas, metformin (taken alone) does not induce hypoglycemia.[12] Hypoglycemia during intense exercise have been documented, but is extremely rare.[13] It also does not bring weight gain, and may indeed produce minor weight loss.[14] Metformin also modestly reduce LDL and triglyceride levels.[15]

It is also being used increasingly contained by polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS),[16] non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)[17] and premature puberty,[18] three other diseases that feature insulin resistance; these indications are still considered experimental. Although metformin is not licenced for use in PCOS, the United Kingdom's National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence recommend that women with PCOS and a body mass index above 25 be given metformin when other therapy have failed to produce results.[19] The benefit of metformin in NAFLD have not been extensively studied and may be only short-term.[20]

It may reduce weight gain contained by patients taking atypical antipsychotics.[21]

But I would call your dr and find out exactly why you were put on it.
Well, first of adjectives...you need to call you doctor and be asking them why the doctor approved to start you on this medication. You as a patient have the right to be INFORMED! You do NOT want to just blindly take medication or enjoy procedures that you are not informed of. Let me explain what metformin does...it decreases your livers release of stored glucose (sugar), it also increases the absorption of glucose within the intestines, this thereby helps to keep the bodies glucose within a better balance. There is an unlabeled use of metformin to treat PCOS, however if you blood sugars stay around 80 you need to variety sure that the metformin is not dropping your blood sugar too low. But, like I said earlier, you have need of to call your doctor and find out why he made the decision to put you on this medication. if you dont own anything do not take it. doctors are just bs'ers. your body heal its self dont trust doctors!
